Chick or Treat Day 3 – Gypsy Costume
When I put out the call earlier this month for Halloween costume ideas, I received many responses and even a few cries for help. One of the cries for help came from Free Range Kate, who was hoping to join this year’s Halloween festivities dressed as a Gypsy; but needed my help in the sewing department.
As I dug around, searching for inspiration to create the gypsy costume, I was reminded of Sarah Jarosz’s song “Gypsy.” The way she describes the beauty and mystery that we associate with gypsies is impeccable.
I saw a gypsy today, she was beautiful, I couldn’t look away. She was yellow and grey, the colors of the day. A bit too gorgeous, and not much to say. Stars on her little white wrists, silken ribbons flowing from her hips. A smile that stopped time, bittersweet as wine, she’s lost and she’s fine, taking her time.”
With the Sarah Jarosz’s song and photos of Esmeralda from Hunchback of Notre Dame dancing in my head, we popped into Jo-Ann Fabric and found some great textiles and accessories.
To make a similar costume, you will need the following supplies:
- 1 yard orange satin (or any other shiny brightly colored material)
- ½ yard brown satin
- 1 yard sheer patterned material
- elastic for the skirt waistband
- glittered or other gold accessories (we found some trim with gold dangling coins attached and elastic gold sequins)
Chick or Treat Day 2 – Pinky, Blinky, Inky and Clyde Costumes
While perusing the craft section on Flipboard the other day, I came across a costume post featuring Pac-Man ghosts and instantly fell in love with the quirky Pinky, Blinky, Inky and Clyde ensembles. It is a great group costume idea that I was able to put together for about $10 per costume.
I purchased one yard of brightly colored knit for each of the ghosts. I decided on knit because it required a limited amount of sewing, as knit does not require a hem. My fabric store had a small selection of knit, so I settled for neon green, bright blue and hot pink. I also purchased one yard of white knit (which is enough to make the top section for three ghost costumes) and 1/8 of a yard of black knit, to create the eyeballs. Read more
