A post from Free Range Kate

Here’s to cheating, stealing, fighting and drinking.
If you cheat, may you cheat death.
If you steal, may you steal a woman’s heart.
If you fight, may you fight for a brother.
And if you drink, may you drink with me!

St. Patrick’s Day, a day when we all have a little bit of Irish in us! This week I am heading to New Orleans to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day properly…with friends, parades, green Irish paraphernalia and copious amounts of alcohol. The only problem is, we’re not 21 anymore, and hangovers hurt more than ever! In an effort to promote fun and prevent  ‘The Green Irish Flu,’ (aka the March 18th hangover), I put together some party favors for my friends.

My inspiration for this project started when I found some cute chinese take out boxes at Michaels. I had already bought some fun accessories, and thought the boxes would offer a cute presentation. From there, I decided to turn it into a little ‘survival kit’ of sorts.

For the ‘fun’ aspect of my party favor, I included:

    • Beaded necklaces
    • Fun headbands
    • Gold coin chocolates
    • Temporary tattoos

For the responsible ‘let’s all try to avoid hangovers’ aspect of my party favor, I included:

  • Packets of Emergen-C /Pedialyte
  • Breath mints
  • Advil (essential for the morning after)
  • Tums

I added a little note to the inside of each box to pull together the theme, and added some gold and rainbow colored ribbon to the outside of each box for a little color. I think they turned out quite cute and can easily be altered for any event that involves heavy drinking!

Here’s wishing everyone a happy and safe St. Patrick’s Day. Don’t forget to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Garden Markers

In preparation for Spring gardening I was stumbling around the internet looking for inexpensive, and eye pleasing garden markers to add to plot #2 this year, and found these gems on the craftjr.com website. Building from their concept I created these.

Supplies:

Clear decorative gem stones (found at any craft store)

Yarn or Rafia

Any kind of sticks or dowels (I used bamboo)

Scissors

Modge Podge

Hot Glue Gun

Saw (if your sticks need to be cut)

Computer and Printer, or Paper and Marker to create your veggie tags

Method:

Step One: Create your garden tags.  I created mine on the computer, but they can also be made by hand with a marker.  Make sure the tags are smaller than your decorative gem stones in diameter. Also for each veggie you will need two garden tags, as each garden marker has a front and a back.

Step Two: Using clear drying modge podge glue the print side of your garden tags to the flat side of the decorative gem stone, so the blank side of the tag is now facing you, and you can see the tag through the front of the stone.

Step Three: Using a hot glue gun, glue the decorative gems together by running a line of hot glue all the way around the outside seam of the gems where they are placed together, thus creating a seal.

Step Four: Cut your dowels or sticks to your desired height (mine are approximately 22 inches tall). Then put one large dab of hot glue at the top of the stick and place your garden marker on top.

Step Five: Once the glue is dry enough to hold the gem in place, you will further secure the gem by wrapping yarn or rafia around the stick and part of the gem.  Secure the yarn or rafia using additional hot glue.

Decorate a Disposable Plate

This past Sunday marked the birthday of one of our very own Chicks, Miss Kate.  In lieu of the traditional birthday cake or cupcakes, I whipped up a batch of funfetti fudge (recipe can be found on The Pursuit of Hippiness Blog.) The fudge itself is very colorful, but I wanted to spruce up the bland disposable plate presentation, so I added a bit of frill using cupcake tins and yarn.

If you are heading to a party and your disposable plate needs a little extra flare, this only takes about 5-10 minutes and costs less than $1.

Flatten out 10-15 cupcake tins (I used two different cupcake tin patterns)

Using needle and yarn make large straight stitches to fasten the cupcake tins to the plate.
